19 In a retrospective review of 32 consecutive women with early-stage cervical cancer who opted for trachelectomy, after a median of 31 months' follow-up, 24 women regained normal menstruation, six women attempted conception, three conceived, and one had cancer recurrence and death from recurrence. This procedure involves removal of the cervix with preservation of the uterus. Trachelectomy is useful for preserving fertility in women who are appropriate candidates. 19, 20įor women with early-stage cervical cancer, hysterectomy is not necessarily required. Limitations include the need for expertise to ensure that shielding does not magnify the doses delivered, and the fact that shielding techniques are feasible only with specific radiation fields and anatomy. Research on the effectiveness of gonadal shielding is limited to case series for both women and men. The shielding is used to decrease the dose of radiation delivered to reproductive organs. Gonadal shielding is an option for women and men who need to have radiation therapy directed at pelvic organs.
